Groombridge Station

GB_1

Groombridge is the principal intermediate station on the Spa Valley Railway, located roughly halfway along the line. It offers visitors access to the historic village of Groombridge, famously straddling the counties of Kent and Sussex, and is the perfect spot to explore local attractions, enjoy a countryside walk, or simply relax in the sunshine.

The current station is a remarkable volunteer-built reconstruction, created after the original building was demolished to make way for a housing development in the 1990s. Thanks to thousands of hours of dedicated work and the support of Heritage Lottery funding, Groombridge Station has been lovingly brought back to life — complete with a recreated ticket office and restored platform entrance.

We now share the Old Station Building with Withyham Parish Council. Inside you’ll find our ticket office, railway administration team, and a public space full of local character.

Things to Do at Groombridge

  • Explore the village – Just a short walk away, you’ll find the church of St Thomas, a children’s playground, and two excellent pubs:
  • The Junction Inn, offering 10% off meals with a valid Spa Valley Railway ticket.
  • The Crown, a traditional pub full of charm and character.
  • Take a walk to Harrison’s Rocks – to see the trains pass below or connect to the Forest Way — a traffic-free path for walkers and cyclists (part of National Cycle Route 21).

A Real Working Station

Groombridge is also our main crossing point for trains, featuring its own signal box and heritage semaphore signals. The signal box was built entirely by volunteers and uses the original lever frame from Birchden Junction, located a mile down the line towards Eridge. Since August 2014, it has been fully operational, controlling train movements when multiple services run or when Groombridge is a terminus.

Getting Here

We recommend arriving at Groombridge by train, as parking outside the station is limited. However, a free public car park is available in the village centre — approximately 150 yards away, opposite the Post Office.

At the Station

Groombridge is known as the sunniest spot on the railway, making it a favourite place for a relaxing picnic. On running days, our station refreshment kiosk opens up, selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, and ice cream. There’s also a well-stocked second-hand railway bookstall on the platform, with bargains to be found for enthusiasts — all priced below typical online listings.
